Child Safety

Our Association is a Child Safe Organisation. We commit to providing a safe environment for children in netball and we follow the principles and benchmarks Netball Victoria has in place.

Our Association agrees to comply with the Child Safety Standards through the Child Safety in Netball Code of Conduct and the Child Safety in Netball Policy.

NETBALL VICTORIA COMMITMENT TO CHILD SAFETY
Every person in the netball community has a responsibility to understand their role in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all children and young people in our care.

Netball Victoria is committed to promoting and protecting the rights of children and preventing abuse from occurring by fostering a culture where children feel safe and empowered.

We also seek to ensure the cultural safety of First Nations children, children from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds and children with a disability.

Child Safety – Coaches/Team Managers & Umpires

Parents and Spectators:

  1. Encourage children to participate if they are interested. However, if a child is not willing, do not force them.
  2. Focus upon the child’s efforts and performance, rather than the overall outcome of the event. This assists the child in setting realistic goals related to their ability by reducing the emphasis on winning.
  3. Teach your child that honest effort is as important as victory so that the result of each game is acceptable without undue disappointment.
  4. Encourage your child to always play by the rules.
  5. Never ridicule or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition.
  6. Remember your child should be involved in netball for their enjoyment, not yours.
  7. Remember your child learns best by example. Applaud good play by both your team and by members of the opposing team.
  8. If you disagree with an official or umpire, raise the issue through the appropriate channels, rather than questioning the official’s/umpire’s judgment and honesty in public. Remember, most officials give their time and effort voluntarily for your child’s involvement.
  9. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from junior sporting activities.
  10. Recognise the value and importance of volunteer coaches. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child and deserve your support.
  11. Support your club officials in maintaining the highest standard of behaviour both on and off the field for the betterment of the Association and your family. Offer your assistance to the team that your child is playing in so that every opportunity is being provided for the very best supervision and support. Your involvement will give both yourself and your child far more satisfaction.
  12. Avoid use of derogatory language based on gender or race.

4. MATCH DURATION

4.2 EXTRA TIME
Before a match begins the event organiser may advise teams and umpires that, in the event that scores are tied at full-time, extra time will be played to determine a winner. The length of each half will also be specified. The following procedure will apply:

    1. There is an interval of 4 minutes at the end of full-time. (This will vary at the SNA depending on game lengths)
    2. Extra time consists of two halves of equal length, not exceeding 7 minutes each, with a half-time interval of 1 minute. Teams change ends at half-time.
    3. The first centre pass in each half is taken by the team entitled to the next centre pass.
    4. In the event of a tie remaining at the end of extra time, a visual signal is placed at the official bench to indicate that play will continue until one team leads by two goals. (At the SNA umpires decide on a visual sign with the current scorers in the event of an ongoing tie)

Grading System

SNA Winter Competition

Senior Regrading – Week 3 of the Competition
Junior Regrading – Week 4 of the Competition

Coaches and Team Managers are invited in to discuss team regrading with the SNA Convenors. Request forms are issued in the week prior to regrading for teams to submit if wishing to move or stay in their current sections.

Regrading is optional, however, if it is felt a team needs to be moved up or down in a section for the benefit of all, the SNA will make the decision to do so.
