1934 – Shepparton Embraces the Game

Exhaustive research uncovered in an article in the Shepparton News of Monday, the 14th of May 1934, headed “Shepparton Association Forms”. The article advised of a ‘preliminary’ meeting held at the High School to consider the formation of a ladies’ basketball association.

Delegates from six prospective clubs were in attendance. It was obvious that there was much enthusiasm for a competition to begin as soon as possible. It was decided that matches be played on Wednesday afternoons, commencing at 4 o’clock. (In those days Wednesday was a half-day holiday for many workers, and businesses opened all day on Saturdays).

The commencing date for the season was fixed for May 23, 1934, and Victorian Basketball Association rules would apply.

And so, the inaugural season of the Shepparton Ladies’ Basketball Association began.

Competing teams for the first year were: Old Students, St Brendan’s, High School, Mooroopna, Younger Set and Fairleys.

By 1940 eight teams were competing, and in 1970, the women’s game of Basketball was changed to Women’s Netball.

Moving forward 80 years, the SNA now runs three regular competitions which include an All-Abilities section as well as a Tournament, Carnival,
and a NetSetGO Program.

Across these competitions we have more than 100 teams over 30 different clubs.

Recently, the SNA Courts were refurbished and upgraded as per Netball Victoria requirements.
